At least 30 people have been killed in heavy clashes in the southern Yemeni city of Zinjibar, officials have said.
The violence, which officials blame on al-Qaeda militants, comes days after President Ali Abdullah Saleh left the country after being injured in an attack on his compound.
Government officials routinely blame violence in the country on al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.
There were also reports of violence in Yemen’s second largest city, Taiz. According to the AFP news agency, it is now controlled by government opponents.

Tens of thousands of children trapped in intense fighting in Misrata are in serious danger amid concern over a humanitarian crisis in the only city in western Libya not under the control of Muammar Gaddafi.
At least 20 children, mostly under the age of 10, have been killed in the besieged city in the past month, according to Unicef, the UN children’s agency. Many more have been injured by gunfire or shrapnel from mortars and tank shells. (more…)

The vehicles, packed with people, were 3 1/2 miles from a dozen U.S. special operations soldiers, who had been dropped into the area hours earlier to root out insurgents. The convoy was closing in on them.

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) — NATO refused to apologize Friday for a deadly airstrike it conceded may have mistakenly killed people it has pledged to protect, angering Libyan opposition leaders amid an increasingly frustrating campaign to oust Moammar Gadhafi.
British Royal Navy Rear Adm. Russell Harding told reporters that NATO forces may have hit rebel tanks during the airstrike near the eastern oil town of al-Brega Thursday.
Witnesses told CNN that two rebel fighters and two doctors were killed when missiles struck a rebel formation on the eastern Libyan battlefront. (more…)
