West Bank

Israeli forces injured 23 Palestinians, the large majority of them in clashes in East Jerusalem. Since the beginning of 2010, Israeli forces have injured 1,051 Palestinians, up nearly 40 percent from the equivalent period in 2009 (755 injuries). Around half of 2010 injuries took place during confrontations in East Jerusalem. Two members of Israeli forces were also injured this week.

On 20 March 2010, soldiers killed two youths in the village of Iraq Burin, near Nablus . The IDF Spokesperson stated that the two had been killed by rubber-coated metal bullets while participating in a violent, illegal demonstration. Several days after B’Tselem published its findings regarding the incident, which contradicted this statement, the Judge Advocate General’s Office announced a rare decision that the Military Police would investigate the incident. A 17-year-old Palestinian girl has been killed in Gaza by Israeli fire.

After initial denials, Israeli army officials said the girl was killed by Israeli troops during a clash with Palestinian militants on Thursday.

Reports say that two others were injured in the exchange in central Gaza near the Israeli border.

The Gaza-Israel border has been quiet, except for sporadic violence, since Israel launched a devastating three-week campaign in Gaza in late December.

Six months after the offensive, Gaza remains under blockade, a state of affairs Israel says will continue while its soldier Gilad Shalit remains in Hamas captivity.

Reports named the 17-year-old girl as Hyam Ayash, a resident of the Deir al-Balah refugee camp. (more…)

An Israeli soldier fired into a crowd of Palestinian villagers Tuesday, killing a 10-year-old boy, after a protest by residents who oppose Israel’s installation of a barrier sealing off the West Bank, witnesses said.

The Israeli military said it was investigating the incident in Nilin, near Ramallah, where villagers have been protesting for weeks that the barrier is cutting them off from about 600 acres of their olive groves.

Witnesses in the crowd said the soldier fired a single rifle shot from a distance of about 100 yards. Ahmad Moussa was struck in the forehead and died instantly, according to paramedics. (more…)
