KABUL (AFP) – A NATO air strike killed up to 27 Afghan civilians, including women and a child, sparking fresh anger from Kabul on Monday against US-led forces pressing a major offensive to defeat the Taliban.

In a further blow to efforts to quell the eight-year insurgency, a suicide bomber killed an influential Afghan leader and 13 other people in a relatively peaceful eastern province on the Pakistan border Monday, police said. (more…)

Suicide bomber kills eight in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Oct 23 (Reuters) – A Taliban suicide bomber killed eight people outside a key Pakistani airforce facility on Friday, with officials quick to deny suggestions the target was linked to the country’s nuclear program. The bomber detonated explosives strapped to his body at a checkpoint outside the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex in Kamra, some 75 kms (45 miles) northwest of the capital, Islamabad.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — A rocket attack in Afghanistan’s south wounded two children Sunday, a reminder of militant violence threatening the country as the presidential election approaches.

The rocket hit a shop in Kandahar city, where the children were working inside, police official Mohammad Jan said. No group immediately claimed responsibility.

The attack came a day after a suicide car bomb killed seven people and wounded 91 outside NATO’s military headquarters in Kabul. The Taliban said it was responsible. (more…)
