The small community of Mabini is located in a remote part of the Visayas region with little access to basic services. Regular clashes between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the New People’s Army hamper development and force civilians to flee their homes and seek shelter elsewhere. Drinking water poses a problem. The only source is located two and a half kilometres away. ICRC engineers have begun to extract water from a nearby spring, to help both residents and the displaced. TAGUM CITY – Residents of at least two villages in Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley fled their homes as government soldiers launched an offensive against communist rebels, officials said yesterday.

In Nabunturan, Compostela Valley, an undetermined number of people left their homes as police clashed with New People’s Army (NPA) rebels Wednesday evening.

A former rebel, serving as police guide, went missing during the clash that started in Barangay Mainit, said Senior Supt. Ronald dela Rosa, Compostela Valley police chief.

The fighting went on until early yesterday as soldiers were sent in to help the police. (more…)
