KABUL, Afghanistan — Twelve trucks, most of them carrying fuel to a NATO base in eastern Afghanistan, were burned by an angry crowd early Sunday less than 30 miles from Kabul, according to local officials and NATO reports. The attack was thought to be in retribution for two raids by a joint Afghan-American force over the weekend, Afghan officials said. (more…)

At least two civilians and three Afghan police officers have been killed after the Taliban attacked a governors’ compound and election office near Kabul, just 10 days ahead of the country’s elections.

Taliban suicide bombers detonated themselves and fighters fired rocket-propelled grenades during the attack on Monday on the buildings in Pule Alam, 60km from the Afghan capital, local officials said.

Gunbattles between the fighters and police lasted several hours, said Deen Mohammad Darwish, a spokesman for the governor of Logar province. (more…)
