TRIPOLI, Libya, July 27 (UPI) — Libyan rebels say they’re finding thousands of land mines in civilian areas as they press toward the country’s capital city of Tripoli.

The number of mines found and deactivated by the rebels has swollen from hundreds to thousands as the fighters move into towns abandoned by troops loyal to Moammar Gadhafi, The Washington Post reported Tuesday. (more…)

Human Rights Watch | July 8, 2011

Zintan – Libyan government forces have placed at least three minefields containing antipersonnel and antivehicle landmines outside the village of al-Qawalish in the western Nafusa Mountains, Human Rights Watch said today.

“The government’s blatant disregard for the safety of its civilians is shameful,” said Steve Goose, arms director at Human Rights Watch. “Landmines are a weapon that will claim civilian limbs and lives for years to come.” (more…)

TRIPOLI, Libya — Militia loyal to Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi laid land mines on the edge of the city of Ajdabiya in eastern Libya, Human Rights Watch said in a statement Wednesday.

Peter Bouckaert, a researcher for the group working out of the rebel stronghold of Benghazi, said in the statement that both antivehicle and antipersonnel mines had been found in the ground. An electrical utility truck ran over and detonated two antipersonnel mines on Monday, and 24 antivehicle mines and more than 30 antipersonnel mines were later removed from the same area.
