NAIROBI, Kenya — More than 15 women cleaning the streets of Mogadishu, Somalia, were killed Sunday by a large bomb buried in a pile of garbage, witnesses and hospital officials said.

Mogadishu, the country’s bullet-pocked capital, has seen more than its share of carnage lately as Islamist insurgents wage an intense urban battle against government and Ethiopian forces. But witnesses described an especially grisly and panicked scene on Sunday after a street sweeper accidentally tripped a large roadside bomb. (more…)

The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia today expressed grave concern at the rapidly deteriorating security situation in the country after two Somali aid workers were killed on Friday, while the UN World Food Programme (WFP) reported that one of its transport agents was shot dead on Sunday. A mother and two children are among 25 people and 13 civilians, killed in fierce fighting in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, witnesses say.

They were killed when a mortar shell landed on their house, neighbours said. The fighting began when 100 insurgents armed with rocket-propelled grenades attacked three government and Ethiopian bases south of the city. (more…)
