Israeli forces injured 23 Palestinians, the large majority of them in clashes in East Jerusalem. Since the beginning of 2010, Israeli forces have injured 1,051 Palestinians, up nearly 40 percent from the equivalent period in 2009 (755 injuries). Around half of 2010 injuries took place during confrontations in East Jerusalem. Two members of Israeli forces were also injured this week.

A 17-year-old Palestinian girl has been killed in Gaza by Israeli fire.

After initial denials, Israeli army officials said the girl was killed by Israeli troops during a clash with Palestinian militants on Thursday.

Reports say that two others were injured in the exchange in central Gaza near the Israeli border.

The Gaza-Israel border has been quiet, except for sporadic violence, since Israel launched a devastating three-week campaign in Gaza in late December.

Six months after the offensive, Gaza remains under blockade, a state of affairs Israel says will continue while its soldier Gilad Shalit remains in Hamas captivity.

Reports named the 17-year-old girl as Hyam Ayash, a resident of the Deir al-Balah refugee camp. (more…)

Gaza City, Jan 23 (DPA) The radical Islamic organisation Hamas said Thursday it would begin Sunday making cash payments to victims of the recent Israeli military offensive against the Gaza Strip.Taher al Nuni, spokesman for the Hamas-led government in the Strip, said families of those killed in the offensive would receive 1,000 euros, while the wounded would each receive 500 euros.

Explosion in Gaza destroys home of a Hamas commander, killing 5

JERUSALEM: A large explosion in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya destroyed a residential building Thursday, killing a baby girl and four Palestinian men known locally to be Hamas militants.

Hamas, the Islamic group that controls Gaza, initially blamed an Israeli airstrike for the blast. It then unleashed a hail of rockets and mortar rounds at Israeli towns and villages around the periphery of Gaza. (more…)

Elderly Israeli woman killed by Gaza rocket

A 75 year old Israeli woman was killed yesterday by a rocket fired from Gaza as Israel suggested any truce in the Strip depended on the release of the Army corporal seized almost two years ago.

The woman died after the rocket struck a house in Yesha, nine miles from Gaza’s eastern border and further than the usual targets of Qassam rockets. Islamic Jihad said it had fired rockets at the time of the fatal attack. (more…)
