LONDON (AlertNet) – A six-ship flotilla bound for Gaza that was intercepted on Monday by Israeli marines was carrying 10,000 tonnes of aid. The flotilla, led by a Turkish vessel, attempted to break Israel’s three-year blockade of the coastal territory that aid agencies say has had a devastating effect on the livelihoods and lives of Gaza’s 1.5 million Palestinians. KUNDUZ, Afghanistan (Reuters) – Taliban fighters stormed a district police headquarters in once-quiet northern Afghanistan overnight, killing the police chief and two of his men, an official said, as violence spreads into once safe areas.

The attack, which led to a four-hour gunbattle into the early hours of Wednesday in Kunduz, is the latest in a wave of rising violence a week before an August 20 election which militants have vowed to disrupt. (more…)
