The United Nations Security Council on Monday called for the protection of civilians threatened by conflict.

The 15-member Security Council adopted a statement expressing deep regret that civilians continue to account for the vast majority of casualties in armed conflicts.  The statement demands that all relevant parties put an end to such practices and recognizes that nations bear the primary responsibility to ensure the human rights of all individuals within their borders.

UNHCR is alarmed by a fast deteriorating humanitarian situation at the northern part of the Kenya-Somali border. This week we have seen hundreds of Somalis continuing to flee clashes between Al-Shabaab and Ahlu Sunna Wal Jamaa, a militia group allied to the transitional Somali Government, in the Somali border town of Beled Hawo.

KABUL – In unusually blunt remarks, the chief of the United Nations mission in Afghanistan warned in an interview this weekend that unless Afghanistan’s international partners conducted their military operations with more care and cultural sensitivity, redoubled their work to minimize civilian casualties and accelerated their reconstruction programs, they risked jeopardizing their efforts to stabilize and rebuild the country. The International Committee of the Red Cross says the humanitarian situation in Somalia continues to deteriorate and is among the worst in the world. The Red Cross says it is stepping up its emergency relief operation for hundreds of thousands of displaced people. Lisa Schlein reports from ICRC headquarters in Geneva.

The people of Somalia are being crushed by war and drought. The International Committee of the Red Cross is one of the few aid agencies still working in this increasingly dangerous environment. (more…)
