MANILA, Philippines—Disappointed that the government did not heed its call for a temporary truce with Moro rebels in time for Ramadan, the Commission on Human Rights appealed to the military to spare civilians in its continued operations.

“Whether or not they persist to go ahead with the offensive, we ask them to simply carry out their operations against the rogue elements of the Moro Liberation Front, which means Commander Kato and Bravo,” CHR Leila de Lima during a press conference on Monday. (more…)

Wars around the globe have killed three times more people in the second half of the 20th century than previously estimated, a study released yesterday shows.

About 5.4 million deaths were caused by armed conflicts between 1955 and 2003 in 13 nations surveyed, ranging from 7000 in the Democratic Republic of Congo to 3.8 million in Vietnam. (more…)
