An anti-NATO demonstration in southern Afghanistan’s Zabul province turned violent Friday, when three Afghan civilians and a police officer were shot dead.

Afghan police say they were forced to fire into the crowd after insurgents infiltrated the protest in the town of Qalat and shot and killed a police officer. Officials say three civilians were killed when the police returned fire. (more…)

KABUL, Afghanistan — The number of Afghan civilians killed in war-related violence rose 15 percent in the first half of this year, according to a U.N. report released Thursday that offered grim statistics about the human toll of increased fighting.

Violence has been on the rise as the Taliban and other insurgents try to regain territory lost in the fall and winter to the U.S.-led coalition in southern Afghanistan. (more…)

The Taliban on Saturday declared the start of a spring offensive in Afghanistan, warning that insurgents plan to attack foreign troops, Afghan security forces and government officials in coming days.
