KABUL, Afghanistan — The number of Afghan civilians killed in war-related violence rose 15 percent in the first half of this year, according to a U.N. report released Thursday that offered grim statistics about the human toll of increased fighting.

Violence has been on the rise as the Taliban and other insurgents try to regain territory lost in the fall and winter to the U.S.-led coalition in southern Afghanistan. (more…)

RAMADI, Iraq, March (Xinhua) — Ten people were killed and 26 others wounded in Thursday’s suicide bomb attack at a government bank in Iraq’s western province of Anbar, a provincial police source said.

“Our latest report said that eight soldiers and two civilians were killed and 26 people wounded, including 20 soldiers, by the suicide bomb attack in the town of Haditha,” the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. (more…)
