In the Syrian city of Ariha, the cherry trees are covered with deep red fruit. It is harvest time and the cherries are sweet, but no one comes to pick them. Two weeks ago, after the regime’s elite troops had transformed peaceful demonstrations in the nearby provincial capital Idlib into bloodbaths, two young men tried to save the cherry harvest. They loaded their small truck full of cherries and took off for the port  city of Latakia in western Syria. They didn’t make it very far. A military patrol stopped the two men in front of a sugar refinery and shot them dead.

DAMASCUS – Gunmen from a pro-Syrian Palestinian organization shot and killed as many as 14 people during a protest at a Palestinian refugee camp near Damascus on Monday, WAFA, the official Palestinian news agency, reported on Tuesday.

This week, Israeli forces injured 13 Palestinians in weekly protests and during search‐and‐arrest operations throughout the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Also this week, 15 members of Israeli forces were injured by stones thrown by Palestinians. Thus far in 2011, 699 Palestinians and 47 Israeli soldiers and policemen were injured in conflict‐related incidents in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, a six per cent increase and 44 per cent decline, respectively, compared to the equivalent period of 2010. I want to report on a four-day visit I made to the occupied Palestinian territory and to Israel.

I met Palestinian and Israeli officials as well as affected Palestinians and humanitarian organizations, as well as affected Israelis in Sderot. I also visited communities in Area C of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and in Sderot in Israel. (more…)

Over 200 Palestinians injured in clashes with Israeli forces

This week, Israeli forces injured 204 Palestinians, including at least 60 children, the majority of them in demonstrations commemorating the 63rd anniversary of what Palestinians refer to as the 1948 Nakba (the catastrophe). Four members of Israeli forces were also injured during the week. Thus far in 2011, 666 Palestinians have been injured by Israeli forces in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, compared to 628 in the equivalent period of 2010. (more…)

Military activities affecting civilians

During the two‐week reporting period, Israeli forces injured 46 Palestinians, including 14 children, in the West Bank, almost twice as many as those injured in the previous two‐week period (20).  The total number of Palestinian injuries since the beginning of 2011 (378) is roughly 34 percent below the parallel figure in 2010.
