Ban Ki-moon’s special representative to Afghanistan has said Obama’s troops surge strategy is “successful” in Afghanistan.
“The fact is that the surge by General Petraeus is working,” UN’s Special Envoy to Afghanistan Staffan de Mistura has said at the Middle East Institute.
De Mistura has acknowledged the violence in Afghanistan looks very bad.
“But he said the Taliban were attacking away from areas where they were under pressure – and alienating Afghans through indiscriminate killings,” he has said.
He sees the chances of the Taliban regrouping for spring fights against troops in Afghanistan less likely.
He has called this year crucial to progress on negotiating a political settlement with the Taliban.
We have all agreed and even the Taliban have come to know that “there is no military victory in Afghanistan,” he said.
As the commander of the entire coalition troops in Afghanistan, the US four-star General David Petraeus leads around 100,000 US troops in the country.
