Thirteen of them were killed everyday in Pakistan alone in some 282 incidents of violence, according to a report compiled by the Conflict Monitoring Centre (CMC). Over one thousand among these causalities were innocent civilians.
A total of 1186 people were killed in Pakistan during the period and more than one thousand others wounded out of which, 314 were the victims of 52 drone attacks, which constitutes over one fourth (26.48 %) of the total casualties in armed conflicts in Pakistan, the report says.
The CMC, an Islamabad based independent research center, in its quarterly report has compared the anti-state militancy reports of Pakistan, Afghanistan and India after collecting data from mainstream national and international media.
The centre has mentioned that during the period at least 1139 incidents of anti-state violence were reported in the three countries killing at least 3648 and injuring 2429 peoples. Out of these 1139 incidents, 522 were reported in Afghanistan, 335 in India and 282 in Pakistan.
Over one thousand of those killed were civilians that constitute 28 PC of total deaths. Most of the civilians (396) were killed in Afghanistan while 388 civilians were killed in Pakistan and 241 were killed in India. The data shows that 96 percent of those killed in suicide attacks in Pakistan were civilians. Suicide attacks were more lethal in Pakistan than in Afghanistan.
In Afghanistan 23 suicide attacks were reported during the last three months of 2010 killing 43. During the same period, militants carried out 12 suicide attacks in Pakistan killing as many as 265 people. It shows that in Afghanistan every suicide attack killed only two persons while in Pakistan every suicide attack killed 22 persons, says the report.
December was the deadliest for the people of Pakistan when 484 people were killed in 109 incidents of anti-state violence in the country.
In October, 323 people were killed and 185 others injured in 89 different incidents while 379 persons lost their lives and 381 others left wounded in 84 acts of anti-state violence in November. At least 78 security forces personnel also lost their lives in various incidents. It forms about 6.58% of the total deaths in Pakistan during the reported period. Every second day of the last quarter of the year 2010 saw a drone attack in Pakistan and each attack killed 6 people.
In average, everyday 3 people were killed in drone attacks. Killings in drone attacks constitute over one fourth of the total casualties in armed conflicts in Pakistan. As such every fourth persons killed in violence in Pakistan was targeted in a drone attack, the report mentions.
Regarding the militant activities the CMC report says that at least 573 people were killed and 879 injured in 183 activities of militants during the last quarter. Approximately two third of the victims of the militants’ activities were civilians (378). The second largest victims of such activities were the militants themselves as 118 of them were also killed in retaliation.
The highest casualties were reported in suicide attacks in the country. There were 12 suicide attacks reported in the last quarter of the year 2010 killing 265 people and leaving 592 injured. The civilian victims (249) form more than nine tenth (93.96%) of the total casualties in suicide attacks. Those sustained injuries (592) in suicide attacks constitute about two third (67.35%) of the total left wounded in militant activities.
“Fata has been the worst hit area by militancy. More than two fifth (40.98 %) of the militant activities (75) and less than one half (45.72 %) of the consequent fatalities (262) in the country were reported in Fata. In Khyber PK, 189 people were killed and 248 others were injured in 40 different acts of militancy.
In Baluchistan, there were 62 such incidents reported killing 80 people and inflicting injuries to 65 others. The militants also targeted 04 religious shrines at various places in Pakistan during the reported period. It took lives of 18 people and injured 74 others, the report adds.
