KABUL, Afghanistan (Nov. 3)
Coalition forces came under fire by insurgents Wednesday while conducting several shuras in the Nad ‘Ali district of Helmand province.
Coalition forces positively identified the insurgent’s position and returned fire with small arms and indirect fire. Insurgents returned indirect fire, striking a compound resulting in five Afghan civilians killed and nine wounded, according to initial reports.
Two of the killed and six of the wounded were children. Coalition forces immediately began providing medical care to the wounded civilians and called for medical evacuation. Insurgents again opened fire while an air medical evacuation team air lifted the wounded to an International Security Assistance Force medical treatment facility.
“Insurgents purposely place civilians between themselves and coalition forces, they know they’re going to kill and wound Afghan civilians,” said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. “Our thoughts and concerns are with the families of the innocent victims of this senseless crime.”
