MOGADISHU (Mareeg)—At least two civilians have been killed and ten others have been injured in heavy shelling that hit in northern Mogadishu on Sunday.
Residents say the shelling targeted the part of the city where Islamist rebels control.
Workers of Mogadishu ambulance workers say they took seven wounded civilians from Bondhere and Yaqshid districts where several mortars hit.
The wounded civilains have been taken to Medina, Deynile and Keysaney hospitals in the capital.
Witnesses say the casualties of the mortars could increase since it is too early to know all the casualties from the mortar exchange.
It is not known the motive behind the shelling and who fired it but it is suspected that the government soldiers and the African Union Troops fired the mortars to the insurgent hold areas in the capital.
The insurgents often fire mortars to bases of the Somali government soldiers and the African Union Troops in Mogadishu.
