NEW DELHI (AlertNet) – Tens of thousands of civilians in northwest Pakistan need protection from fighting between government forces and Taliban militants and dozens are being injured by shelling and bombardments every day, aid workers said on Thursday.

The army assault in the ethnic Pashtun tribal region of South Waziristan on the Afghan border has so far forced almost 200,000 people from their homes, most of whom have fled since the fighting officially began on Oct. 17.

Pakistan: 250,000 displaced in Pakistan’s Waziristan offensive

Pakistan’s military offensive against pro-Taliban militants in a northwestern tribal area has forced nearly 250,000 civilians to flee their homes.

As Islamabad’s military operation against pro-Taliban militants in South Waziristan entered its third week, Lieutenant General Nadeem Ahmad, chief of the government’s Special Support Group, told reporters on Sunday that between 244,000 and 250,000 people living in the region have migrated to the neighboring towns of Dera Ismail Khan and Tank for their lives. DERA ISMAIL KHAN, PAKISTAN — As Pakistan’s army battles with guns and jets to wrest control of the restive South Waziristan region from the Taliban, it remains unclear whether the military will have another kind of ammunition it desperately needs: the support of people who have lived in the militants’ grip for years.

Among refugees who were jostling for donated blankets last week in this dusty town in North-West Frontier Province, few dared to discuss the Taliban fighters controlling their villages. Several whispered that there was no graver offense than speaking against the Taliban and seemed fearful that breaching that rule would cost them once the offensive — which several referred to as an artificial “drama” cooked up to satisfy the United States — was over.
