KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — This city is no stranger to bombings. There have been many here over the years of war. But the one on Tuesday night — the deadliest — may have done more than any other to deepen Kandahar’s sense of isolation and tip its people into despair that someone, anyone, has the power to halt the mayhem that surrounds them.
The bombing produced an entire city block of devastation, gutting shops and homes and reducing many of the structures to mounds of rubble. On Wednesday, residents searched at the scene and hospitals for missing loved ones, as the death toll rose to 41, with more than 60 wounded.
Abdul Nabi, 45, a shopkeeper, could find only two of his six sons in the wreckage. “I rushed to the hospital and found my sons in very bad condition,” he said. “Three of my sons are still unconscious. One 7-year-old son just opened his eyes now. Read the rest of this entry »

Aug 31 (Reuters) - Following are security developments in Iraq at 0900 GMT on Monday.
BAGHDAD - A roadside bomb targeting a U.S. military patrol wounded five civilians in southeast Baghdad’s Rustumiya district, police said.
BAGHDAD - A roadside bomb targeting a governmental convoy wounded five civilians in central Baghdad, police said.
MOSUL - Gunmen shot dead a woman near her house in western Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, on Sunday, police said.
MOSUL - A roadside bomb wounded three policemen when it exploded near their patrol in western Mosul on Sunday, police said.
MOSUL - A roadside bomb wounded a boy near his home in western Mosul on Sunday, police said.
KIRKUK - Gunmen in a car shot and wounded an off-duty police officer driving his car in southern Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north of Baghdad, on Sunday, police said.

NAIROBI, 27 August 2009 (IRIN) – Two months after food deliveries to Somalia’s south-central town of Jowhar were halted, several thousand internally displaced persons (IDPs) are facing a food crisis, sources said.
“The little food we were given in June is gone; we have had nothing in the last two months,” Asiyo Jilibey, a community leader, told IRIN on 27 August. “I don’t know what will happen next but if help does not arrive soon we are in trouble.” Read the rest of this entry »

Aug 28 (Reuters) – Following are security developments in Iraq at 0800 GMT on Friday.
BAGHDAD – A roadside bomb killed two U.S. soldiers in east Baghdad, the U.S. military said.
MOSUL - A roadside bomb targeting an Iraqi army patrol killed one civilian and wounded a soldier in northern Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad on Thursday, police said.
MOSUL - Gunmen killed a man affiliated with Mosul’s al-Hadba political group when he left a mosque in northern Mosul on Thursday, police said. Mostly Sunni Arab al-Hadba dominates Mosul’s provincial council.
MOSUL – Gunmen opened fire on Iraqi police and killed a girl and wounded one civilian in central Mosul on Thursday night, police said.

TAJI – A car bomb killed a civilian and wounded another five inside a bus station in Taji, 20 km (12 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.
BAGHDAD - A roadside bomb wounded two policemen and a civilian when it struck a police patrol in eastern Baghdad on Wednesday, police said.
BAGHDAD - Two bombs attached to two cars wounded 12 people in Baghdad’s northern district of Adhamiya late on Wednesday, police said.
BAGHDAD – A roadside bomb wounded two civilians when it blew up in west Baghdad’s upscale district of Mansour on Wednesday, police said.
KIRKUK – Gunmen in a speeding car attacked a police foot patrol in central Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north of Baghdad, killing a policeman and wounding another, late on Wednesday, police said.
KIRKUK – A roadside bomb wounded two civilians when it exploded in central Kirkuk on Wednesday, police said.
