MOGADISHU, Somalia — A suicide car bomber killed Somalia’s security minister and at least 19 others north of the capital Thursday in an attack the Somali president blamed on Al Qaeda, news reports said.
“It was an act of terrorism and it is part of the terrorist attack on our people,” the president, Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, said. “Al Qaeda is attacking us.”
A senior Somali diplomat also died in Thursday’s attack on a hotel in the town of Belet Weyne in Hiran Province close to the border with Ethiopia, Mr. Ahmed said. It had been initially unclear whether the security minister, Omar Hashi Aden, had been killed, but the president confirmed his death, news reports said. Read the rest of this entry »

The United Nations agency for children on Wednesday accused Somali militiamen of aggression and hostility against its aid workers in Somalia and said they were putting over 40,000 lives at risk.
In a recent upsurge in violence, Al Shabaab Islamist militia took over of a UNICEF compound in Jowhar—the organisation’s biggest operational hub—north of the capital Mogadishu, in a push to overthrow the federal transition government.
Since the beginning of May, over 200 people have been killed and more that 122,000 displaced by the fierce fighting in Mogadishu. Read the rest of this entry »

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for more robust measures to protect civilians caught in the middle of armed conflict, noting the “appalling levels of human suffering” endured due to the failure of combatants to fully respect international law.
“Civilians still account for the vast majority of casualties and continue to be targeted and subjected to indiscriminate attacks and other violations by parties to conflict,” Mr. Ban wrote in his latest report on the protection of civilians in armed conflict. Read the rest of this entry »
