    CIVIC is a Washington-based organization founded by the late Marla Ruzicka, a passionate humanitarian killed by a suicide bomb in Baghdad while advocating for war victims in Iraq.

    CIVIC believes that civilians injured and the families of those killed should be recognized and aided by the warring parties involved, and is working toward smart, compassionate policies for civilians caught in the crossfire of conflict.

SOMALIA: Several dead in fresh Somalia clash

At least 14 people have been killed in fresh fighting in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, between government forces and fighters.

Dozens more were wounded as government forces intensified efforts to drive out fighters who have pledged to topple the interim government of Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, the Somali president.

At least five of those killed in what was described as intense fighting in the city’s Jamhuriya area were civilians, witnesses said.

“I saw the dead bodies of five civilians, one of them a woman,” Mohamed Bashir, a resident of the city’s Jamhuriya district told the AFP news agency.

“Three of the victims died when a mortar shell struck their house.” Read the rest of this entry »

Iraq: 9 Killed in Bombing at Cafe

A bomb left in a plastic bag in a popular outdoor cafe in Baghdad exploded Wednesday evening, killing nine people, according to the Ministry of Interior. Thirty-one people were injured in the blast. Read the rest of this entry »

PAKISTAN: In Main Swat Town, No Sign of Civilians or Taliban (AP)

PAKISTAN: UNHCR News Story – Newly Displaced Pakistani Civilians Report Grim Conditions in Swat Valley

An IDP family just arrives in Sugar Mill camp, in Charsadda district. They took advantage of the lifting of the curfew to flee from their home in Char Bagh, in Swat district.
