KABUL, Afghanistan — A joint patrol of American and Afghan security forces killed a civilian and two armed insurgents during an operation in the southern province of Zabul, the American military command said Sunday.

Details obtained under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that between April 2006 to October 2008, the British government made 858 ex-gratia payment to Afghan civilians who either had family members killed or injured in fighting between the Taliban and British troops or whose property had been damaged.

A total of £90,000 has been paid to Afghans who have been injured or the families of those killed in fighting in Helmand.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A bomb exploded next to a vegetable market in eastern Afghanistan early Saturday, killing two people, officials said.

At least 17 others were wounded — 16 civilians and a private security worker — said Taher Khan Sabari, deputy governor of Khost province. The dead included a teenage boy, he said.
