    CIVIC is a Washington-based organization founded by the late Marla Ruzicka, a passionate humanitarian killed by a suicide bomb in Baghdad while advocating for war victims in Iraq.

    CIVIC believes that civilians injured and the families of those killed should be recognized and aided by the warring parties involved, and is working toward smart, compassionate policies for civilians caught in the crossfire of conflict.

Air strike killed 37 Afghan civilians

KABUL (Reuters) – A joint Afghan-U.S. investigation has found that an air strike last week killed 37 civilians and wounded 35 after Taliban militants used the victims’ village as cover for an ambush, the U.S. military said.

President Hamid Karzai said after the incident that mounting civilian casualties was the biggest source of tension with his main backer, the United States.

He called on President-elect Barack Obama to make it his priority to stop the killing of innocent bystanders. Read the rest of this entry »

SOMALIA: Gunmen kill another aid worker in south Somalia

KISMAYU, Somalia (Reuters) – Somali gunmen shot dead a local worker for an international charity in the latest assassination of humanitarian staff, residents said Sunday.

Mohamud Sakow, local head of U.S.-based Mercy Corps charity, was attacked while walking to his house in Jamame town, north of rebel-held Kismayu port, Saturday night. Read the rest of this entry »
