    CIVIC is a Washington-based organization founded by the late Marla Ruzicka, a passionate humanitarian killed by a suicide bomb in Baghdad while advocating for war victims in Iraq.

    CIVIC believes that civilians injured and the families of those killed should be recognized and aided by the warring parties involved, and is working toward smart, compassionate policies for civilians caught in the crossfire of conflict.

SOMALIA: 14 civilians killed in Somali violence

Fourteen civilians are killed in the ongoing fighting between Ethiopian forces and the Islamic Courts Union fighters in Bardale, Somalia.

PHILIPPINES: Red Cross fears for civilians in south Philippines

MANILA, Philippines:A Red Cross official appealed Saturday to government troops and Muslim separatist rebels not to harm civilians as they battle each other in the worst fighting in the southern Philippines in five years.

Dominik Stillhart, International Red Cross deputy director of operations, urged both sides to comply with international humanitarian law “to spare civilian communities and allow delivery of relief assistance.” Read the rest of this entry »

PAKISTAN: Bomber hits Pakistani checkpoint

At least 30 people have been killed in a suicide car bomb attack in Pakistan, officials say.

The attack – at a paramilitary checkpoint 20km from the north-western city of Peshawar – comes as elections for president are under way.
