    CIVIC is a Washington-based organization founded by the late Marla Ruzicka, a passionate humanitarian killed by a suicide bomb in Baghdad while advocating for war victims in Iraq.

    CIVIC believes that civilians injured and the families of those killed should be recognized and aided by the warring parties involved, and is working toward smart, compassionate policies for civilians caught in the crossfire of conflict.

LEBANON: 2 men die of their wounds in Lebanon explosion

SOMALIA: Bomb kills 6 in Somali town housing parliament

BAIDOA, Somalia (Reuters) – A bomb aimed at police exploded in the town housing Somalia’s parliament on Tuesday, killing six civilians and injuring 13 people, witnesses said.

Civilians have taken the brunt of Somalia’s civil war, with nearly 10,000 killed since Islamist insurgents began attacking the government and its Ethiopian army allies in early 2007. Read the rest of this entry »

Ethiopia calls for UN peacekeepers in Somalia

UNITED NATIONS: Ethiopia’s foreign minister on Monday called for the U.N. to deploy peacekeepers to neighboring Somalia, where Islamic militants appear to be gaining strength.

Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin’s comments came just days after an attack on an African Union peacekeepers’ base in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, killed at least 11 civilians. Read the rest of this entry »

LEBANON: Car bomb targets military bus in Lebanon, killing 5

BEIRUT – A car-bomb explosion struck a bus filled with Lebanese soldiers in the northern seaside city of Tripoli today, killing at least four people and wounding 30, including civilians, a Lebanese security official said. The bombing was the latest in a series of recent attacks in Lebanon and Syria that have unsettled the region, with Syrian officials today suggested evidence pointed to Islamic groups in Lebanon for a deadly weekend car bomb explosion in Damascus.
