    CIVIC is a Washington-based organization founded by the late Marla Ruzicka, a passionate humanitarian killed by a suicide bomb in Baghdad while advocating for war victims in Iraq.

    CIVIC believes that civilians injured and the families of those killed should be recognized and aided by the warring parties involved, and is working toward smart, compassionate policies for civilians caught in the crossfire of conflict.

AFGHANISTAN: Afghan survivors tell of wedding bombing

The BBC’s Alastair Leithead is the first journalist to reach the scene of a US air raid which Afghan authorities say killed about 50 civilians in the east of the country on 6 July. He reports on what he found:

On a hillside high in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan there are three charred clearings where the American bombs struck.

Scattered around are chunks of twisted metal, blood stains and small fragments of sequinned and brightly decorated clothes – the material Afghan brides wear on their wedding day. Read the rest of this entry »

AFGHANISTAN: Mounting violence leaves Afghans worried, angry

Nearly a week after a suicide car bomb tore a hole into his family, Khan Mohammad is distraught and disillusioned with the government he voted for at Afghanistan’s first presidential election in 2005.

AFGHANISTAN: Former Afghan governor speaks of insecurity in eastern province

[Presenter] Tamim Nurestani, former governor of Nurestan Province, said that there are security problems in a number of districts in that province. Mr Nurestani said that there are reports about conflicts in the Barg-e Matal District of that province. Meanwhile, security situation is not good in Do Ab and Waigal Districts too.

AFGHANISTAN: 64 civilians killed in US-led strikes: investigations

Official investigations have found that US-led air strikes a week ago killed 64 people, most of them women and children, the heads of separate investigation teams said Friday.

The US-led coalition has denied killing civilians in the strikes on July 4 and July 6 in remote, mountainous areas near the border with Pakistan but said it was looking into the allegations. It says only militants were killed. Read the rest of this entry »
