Text of editorial in Pashto entitled “Reviewing nature of war on terror” by state-owned Afghan newspaper Hewad on 30 July
The recent report published by Pentagon on situation in Afghanistan says armed insurgents may further increase their attacks. The report also says that despite the killing of many Taleban commanders in the operations launched by the coalition and NATO forces, they are still capable of carrying out serious attacks and causing security incidents in other areas.
Reports on terrorist attacks come daily from different areas of the country. Taking into consideration the present military situation in the country and the issues embodied in the report published by Pentagon, the need for reviewing the nature of the war on terror is felt. The objective of the review should be to completely eliminate terrorists and ensure adequate security and stability throughout the country.
The review should be based on the following conditions:
First, the overall attention should be focused on destruction of centers across the Durand Line where terrorists are trained, financially supported and provided with equipment. All financial resources of terrorists must be frozen.
Second, the process of training the national army and police should be stepped up and modern weapons and ammunition should be provided to them.
Third, civilian casualties must be avoided in any way because continuation of civilian casualties can increase terrorism and extremism.
Fourth, complete harmony should be ensured in operations of internal and international forces.
Fifth, the local government administrations should be strengthened.
Sixth, extensive reconstruction should be carried out in remote areas and emergency aid should be delivered to people on time.
