    CIVIC is a Washington-based organization founded by the late Marla Ruzicka, a passionate humanitarian killed by a suicide bomb in Baghdad while advocating for war victims in Iraq.

    CIVIC believes that civilians injured and the families of those killed should be recognized and aided by the warring parties involved, and is working toward smart, compassionate policies for civilians caught in the crossfire of conflict.

IRAQ: Many killed in Iraqi bomb attacks

At least 30 people have been killed in two bombings in Iraq.

The first occurred in the town of Karma, west of Baghdad, where a suicide attacker detonated a bomb at a local council meeting, killing at least 12.

More than a dozen people were wounded. It was the third attack in a week against a local administrative branch of the US-backed Iraqi government. Read the rest of this entry »

IRAQ: U.S. troops killed 9 civilians, local authorities in Iraq say

Nine Iraqi civilians were killed Wednesday in two armed clashes involving U.S. soldiers, local authorities reported. The military said U.S. soldiers were fired upon first in both incidents.

In the capital, three people were killed in a fiery crash after gunfire erupted as their vehicle passed U.S. soldiers with a convoy stopped near the Baghdad international airport to recover a stalled vehicle.

Officials at Yarmouk Hospital identified the dead as a manager and two female employees from a bank at the airport. Iraqi police also reported that two bodyguards were injured. Read the rest of this entry »

RUSSIA: Ingushetia faces violence that engulfed Chechnya

A human rights groups said in a report Wednesday that violence in Chechnya had decreased markedly in recent years but that fighting between Muslim insurgents and Russian troops threatened to engulf a neighboring region.

Human Rights Watch said a recent spike in insurgent attacks in the region, Ingushetia, had provoked a series of kidnappings, torture and arbitrary killings of civilians by law enforcement agents that was reminiscent of the rights abuses in Chechnya. Read the rest of this entry »

PAKISTAN: Pakistan Taleban ‘kill 22 rivals’

Authorities in north-west Pakistan say they have found the bodies of 22 tribesmen who were kidnapped by local Taleban militants on Monday.

The men were seized in South Waziristan tribal area by fighters loyal to top Taleban leader, Baitullah Mehsud.

AFGHANISTAN: Afghans protest alleged civilian casualties by US forces

Hundreds of protesters took to streets in eastern Afghanistan on Monday after a father and son were allegedly killed by gunfire from US-led soldiers, a governor and witnesses said.
